The 8 November 2002 Coast Weekly Squid Fry reported:
WOLF IN HENHOUSE!...Squid's shocked to learn that the latest big gun in Monterey Mayor DAN ALBERT's stealth campaign to flush the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District--the CALIFORNIA-AMERICAN WATER COMPANY.
On Oct. 24, Cal-Am wrote a $10,000 check to the subtly titled Stop the Out-Of-Control! Water Board--Yes on Measure B campaign. "Yup, and we would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you damn squids," Squid imagined Cal-Am's STEVEN LEONARD saying. Drat. Leonard, who manages Cal-Am's Monterey Division, didn't say that. Instead he gave a very Albertian response. "[Measure B] really gives the people of the Monterey Peninsula a chance to vote," he says. "My job is to get the water, catch it, treat it, deliver it to the people and service their needs. We don't have any more water today than we did some 24 years ago." It just smells fishy to Squid. The water district regulates Cal-Am. "It's like PG&E giving money to dissolve the PUC," gripes one like-minded mollusk.
