New Effort to go around voters
Not satisfied with the voter's decisions in 1995 and 1998, some pro-dam people are now pushing to abolish the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD). Their mysterious half page ad in the 'Monterey Herald' which appeared in the 21 October 2000 issue claims they have the answer....let people outside the Monterey Peninsula decide if we get a pro-growth dam.
Take a look at their propaganda at www.dissolvethedistrict.com . They offer nothing new except a few selected excerpts from the 1999 Monterey County Grand Jury report which got most of its inputs from Cal-Am. These folks conveniently failed to mention that most of the money that they report the district spent was done under a Pro-dam majority or was required by various state and federal laws. They also failed to identify who they are. An article in the 24 October 2000 'Monterey Herald' identifies the people behind the ad as real estate agent Jeff Davi and political consultant Robert McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie has represented the Monterey County Hospitality Association in the past; although that organization apparently is not involved in the web site.
They do offer a place for you to send them money. Interestingly, they don't let you onto their site until you give them something...your e-mail address.
It is more important than ever that the people of the Monterey Peninsula keep vigilant.
